Alan Wake 2 to Remain Epic Games Exclusive (2025)

Summary

  • Alan Wake 2 will remain exclusive to the Epic Games Store, as reportedly confirmed by Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.
  • Despite critical success, the game had yet to turn a profit for Remedy Entertainment as of November 2024.
  • The potential sales boost of a Steam release could significantly impact Alan Wake 2's revenue.

Epic Games Founder/CEO Tim Sweeney has reportedly confirmed that Alan Wake 2 isn't headed to Steam and will continue to be exclusively available via Epic Games Store on PC. Besides this platform, Remedy Entertainment's critically acclaimed title, Alan Wake 2, is also available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Despite rolling out in 2023, a year filled with several highly rated AAA releases, Alan Wake 2 successfully stood out from the competition and swept multiple award events, including winning three different recognitions at The Game Awards. Given that Epic Games Publishing funded Remedy's ambitious Alan Wake sequel, the game's PC port was launched as an Epic Games Store exclusive title. However, for those PC gamers who prefer buying their games on Epic's rival storefront, Steam, this exclusivity deal has been a grievance ever since. And, as per a new development, it looks like the status quo isn't expected to change anytime soon.

Why FBC: Firebreak Should Be More 'Alan Wake 2' Than 'Control'

Remedy has made some great games in the last few years, but its upcoming FBC: Firebreak could benefit from leaning more into Alan Wake 2 than Control.

According to 80 Level, Tim Sweeney has verified a viral email exchange with a fan in which he bluntly stated Alan Wake 2 is "not coming" to Steam when asked about a potential Steam launch in the future. The source doesn't mention a statement where the Epic Games boss explicitly legitimizes the email, but it reveals that Sweeney wrote, "Thanks for checking," and continued, "In general, one should not trust claimed email responses as they are super easy to fake." On the other hand, the Reddit user who first posted the brief chat has also added weight to the email's trustworthiness by sharing another instance where they received a reply from the CEO.

Alan Wake 2 to Reportedly Stay Exclusive, Despite Revenue Concerns

While Alan Wake 2 garnered plaudits from critics all over, it's been a different story on the commercial side of things. Although the survival horror game is Remedy's fastest-selling title ever, it still surprisingly hasn't generated a profit for the developer. In November 2024, the Finnish studio revealed Alan Wake 2 had recouped "most" of the money spent on the project but hadn't yet reached break-even. Importantly, that announcement wasn't up to date with the game's physical edition sales and the boost received from the Lake House DLC launched since then.

It's reasonable to think that new sales figures for Alan Wake 2 may reveal that its sales have increased considerably in the months following Remedy's last update. However, the large scope of revenue promised by a potential arrival on Steam is something that still can't be ignored. Thanks to its longevity, the user-base of Valve's platform is undeniably huge and represents a sizable chunk of gamers on PC. It's almost a given that tapping into this section of the market would add significantly to Alan Wake 2's revenue.

Alan Wake 2

A string of ritualistic murders threatens Bright Falls, a small-town community surrounded by Pacific Northwest wilderness. Saga Anderson, an accomplished FBI agent with a reputation for solving impossible cases arrives to investigate the murders. Anderson’s case spirals into a nightmare when she discovers pages of a horror story that starts to come true around her.

Alan Wake, a lost writer trapped in a nightmare beyond our world, writes a dark story in an attempt to shape the reality around him and escape his prison. With a dark horror hunting him, Wake is trying to retain his sanity and beat the devil at his own game.

Anderson and Wake are two heroes on two desperate journeys in two separate realities, connected at heart in ways neither of them can understand: reflecting each other, echoing each other, and affecting the worlds around them.

Fueled by the horror story, supernatural darkness invades Bright Falls, corrupting the locals and threatening the loved ones of both Anderson and Wake. Light is their weapon—and their safe haven — against the darkness they face. Trapped in a sinister horror story where there are only victims and monsters, can they break out to be the heroes they need to be?
