Prepare for a Christmas twist that will tug at your heartstrings! EastEnders is resurrecting a beloved character... 21 years after his dramatic demise. But don't expect a supernatural Christmas special; this return is rooted in a poignant and very real storyline about the devastating effects of dementia.
Earlier this year, viewers were delighted by the return of Nigel Bates to Albert Square. However, the joy was short-lived when it was revealed he is battling dementia. As Nigel's condition sadly worsens in December, he will experience vivid hallucinations, conjuring up familiar faces from his past.
We already knew the iconic Pam St. Clements would be reprising her role as the unforgettable Pat Butcher for this special episode. But here's where it gets even more emotional: Shaun Williamson, the actor behind the hapless but lovable Barry Evans, is also making a comeback!
Yes, you read that right! Barry from EastEnders is back in EastEnders!
Barry, as many fans will remember, met a rather unfortunate end on January 2nd, 2004. His gold-digging wife, Janine, pushed him off a cliff in a shocking act of betrayal. Remember her iconic, darkly comedic line afterward, blaming his footwear? "If only he'd worn slip-on shoes!" That moment cemented Janine as one of soap's most memorable villains.
And this is the part most people miss: Barry and his step-mum Pat had a notoriously difficult relationship. He held her responsible for the tragic death of his father, Roy. Their constant clashes were a staple of the show for years.
However, in this special episode, these imagined versions of Pat and Barry will surprisingly set aside their differences and come together to support Nigel during his time of need. It's a testament to the power of memory and the enduring bonds of family, even in the face of such a cruel disease as dementia. This storyline aims to highlight the disorientating and often distressing reality for people living with dementia, and the importance of compassion and understanding.
Shaun Williamson himself expressed his surprise and excitement about returning to Walford. "It was a complete shock getting the call to go back to Albert Square, but so exciting! I have to admit to a few nerves (loads!) when I walked back onto the set of The Queen Victoria, but it was so great to work with old friends and colleagues on such a brilliant episode. Just goes to show, you never know what's around the corner!"
EastEnders' boss, Ben Wadey, added, "I'm delighted to welcome Shaun Williamson back to EastEnders for Nigel's special episode. Barry Evans was renowned for being one of Walford's unluckiest residents, most notably for his choice of shoes, and so it was a privilege to welcome him back alongside Pat for these special scenes in The Vic."
EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer, where most episodes drop early at 6am ahead of their TV broadcast.
What do you think about this bold storyline choice? Is using beloved deceased characters in this way a sensitive and effective way to portray the effects of dementia, or does it risk trivializing a serious condition? Do you think Barry and Pat can actually help Nigel, even in his imagination? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
