Greg Nicotero Reacts to Jason Universe’s Controversial Jason Voorhees Mask Redesign (2025)

Imagine one of the most iconic symbols in horror history—Jason Voorhees’ hockey mask—getting a makeover, only to spark a fan frenzy of disapproval. That’s exactly what happened when Jason Universe unveiled their redesign, and even legendary special effects artist Greg Nicotero was taken aback by the backlash. But here’s where it gets controversial: was the redesign a bold step forward or a misstep that betrayed the character’s legacy? Let’s dive in.

As we approach the 45th anniversary of Friday the 13th in 2025, the franchise is far from dormant. Last year, Horror Inc., the rights holders, announced the launch of Jason Universe, a sprawling initiative promising new Friday the 13th experiences across entertainment, gaming, immersive events, merchandise, and more. Follow their journey on social media (@JasonUniverse13) or their official website (https://jasonuniverse.com/). To kick things off, they partnered with Angry Orchard Hard Cider (https://www.joblo.com/angry-orchard-jason-universe/) to produce Sweet Revenge (https://www.joblo.com/sweet-revenge-review/), a 13-minute short film reintroducing Jason to the screen. But the real buzz? A redesigned hockey mask that has fans divided.

In a recent interview with YouTuber Born2BeRad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFSQ1XViXAI), Nicotero shared his experience working on the project. “A friend of mine owns a company that handles merchandising for Creepshow and The Walking Dead,” he explained. “They reached out, saying, ‘These people need someone to make a mask.’ When Jason Universe approached us, they already had a design in mind. They showed me the concept, and I thought, ‘It’s interesting—the shape of the eyes, the overall feel.’ We spent months refining it, sculpting a physical version and tweaking every detail. We even created a Jason bust that’s never been seen publicly. But here’s the part most people miss: the mask’s design was finalized before I got involved, and I was surprised by the negative fan reaction. I don’t think it’s a bad design—it’s different, and in today’s world, different can be refreshing. It still feels like Jason, just with a stylized twist.”

Nicotero revealed that while Jason Universe insisted the mask match their provided image exactly, they gave him creative freedom for the rest of the character. “They only specified that this Jason wouldn’t be a rotting zombie, so I drew inspiration from his look in Parts 2 and 3,” he said. “I love the final design—it’s clean, modern, and true to the character’s essence.”

But why change the mask at all? The original 31-hole design is iconic, so why replace it with a 13-hole version? Nicotero speculates, “It’s possible they altered it to secure a copyright, ensuring the design is uniquely theirs. It’s not your typical hockey mask, after all.”

Despite Nicotero’s involvement, his collaboration with Jason Universe was limited. He delivered the design, created 20 physical copies of the mask, and stepped away. He had no involvement with Sweet Revenge, which debuted his Jason design on screen. During the interview, he hinted at another short film in the works, though nothing’s been officially announced.

Horror Inc. president Robert Barsamian defended the redesign, stating, “We’re honoring Jason’s original essence while pushing him into the future. Greg’s work captures the classic Jason—strong, towering, and terrifying—while giving him a fresh look.”

As for my take? While I’ll always cherish the original 31-hole mask, the 13-hole version isn’t without potential. However, as seen in Sweet Revenge, it still feels off—too large, too unfamiliar. There’s room for refinement.

And this is the part most people miss: Redesigns like this often spark debate because they challenge our nostalgia. Is it a necessary evolution or an unnecessary departure? What do you think of Jason Universe’s hockey mask redesign and their collaboration with Greg Nicotero? Let’s spark a discussion—share your thoughts in the comments below. Are you team 31-hole or team 13-hole? Or do you think Jason’s mask should never have been touched?
